Finding Your Perfect Blogging Niche

Finding The Perfect Niche For Your Blog

When starting a blog there are multiple factors to consider when choosing your blogging niche. Most of the time, bloggers are interested in earning passive income, so they want to make sure to choose a profitable blogging niche. However, there is something more important than choosing a profitable niche when it comes to a successful blog.

Your blogging niche should be something you are passionate about. The purpose of a blog is to find something you are passionate about and write helpful content for that niche. You need to find your passion and start blogging in that niche.

Before starting the blog there are lots of things to consider, like what is a blogging niche to begin with? How will my blog make money? Who are the competitors in my niche? Do I stand a chance in my niche? Should I even start a blog with so much competition?

What Is A Blogging Niche?

A blogging niche is the specific topic you are writing about. A few example blogging niches are health & fitness, travel, movie reviews, and video games. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of blogging niches to choose from. Some niches are large and you may need to focus in on a certain area of that niche – this is called a micro-niche.

Let’s take a look at the travel niche. The travel niche has a lot of opportunities because there are lots of places that people like to visit. If you choose this blogging niche, you are going to need to narrow it down a little further. Are you going to choose a specific country, like Japan, Thailand, or Australia? Or are you going to choose something from each country to add some variety? Maybe a blog on what the capital city of each country is like. There are countless possibilities, but the most important thing is to choose something you are passionate about!

What Are You Passionate About?

The most important component of a successful blog is making sure that you find a niche that you are passionate about. The biggest mistake that new bloggers make is choosing a niche that is focused solely on how much money they can potentially make – more on the potentially below. You could pick a profitable niche but if you aren’t passionate about it more than likely you will burnout and quit writing after a few months.

With blogging, you are in it for the long haul. This isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. It is going to take hard work, dedication, and lots of writing… lots and lots of writing. Finding a blogging niche you are passionate about will make all of that hard work and writing enjoyable.

For example, say you like Marvel movies. You are a huge Marvel Cinematic Universe fan (like the rest of us) and want to review all the movies and give your personal opinions. If you are passionate about the MCU, then that is what your niche should be. When searching for your niche, substitute the word “niche” for “passion” and see what comes to mind!

How Will Your Blog Make Money?

Remember that potentially I talked about earlier? Get ready for it!

There is no easy way to say this, but there is no definitive answer to this question. There are so many variables to how your blog could make money. First and foremost, your blog will need traffic to earn some revenue. Once you get the traffic, you could focus on ads, affiliate marketing, or info products – depending on your blogging niche and your audience.

The options truly depend on your blogging niche. But you shouldn’t let potential income affect the niche you choose. Remember, I said to substitute the word “niche” with “passion.” If you keep producing content you are passionate about, your audience will see that the blog you have isn’t just a blog for money. What they will see is a person sharing their love for something they are also interested in.

When you are genuine and produce helpful content, that will grab the attention of the people in your niche and search engines. You will gain rapport with your audience, encouraging them to come back to your blog to read your content, and that can lead to potential income opportunities.

How Should You Consider The Competition In Your Niche?

No matter what blogging niche you choose, there will be competition. There are over 7 billion people in the world, someone has written an article or commented on a forum about your niche. The great news is that you haven’t written an article on your niche and now is your chance!

You will need to look into the competitors in your blogging niche. If you are writing your blog for fun, then this may not be as important to you. But if you are working to rank on Google and earn some money you will want to consider the major competitors.

See who consistently ranks on the front page of Google for your niche. Once you find the websites that keep appearing, check them out. Study their website and try to notice the little things. Take notes on things you like and don’t like, that will be important when you go to create your own site.

When reviewing competitors sites, do not read their articles in depth. When someone submits a search query on Google, they want to find an answer. If you provide a regurgitated answer from one of the big competitors in your blogging niche, who do you think Google is going to rank? Notice their design and layout, not the actual content.

Do You Stand A Chance In Your Niche?

Yes, you will always stand a chance in whatever niche you choose. Let me explain.

Every blogger does the research, puts the data together, writes the article, and publishes it to their blog. That is true for every blogger in every blogging niche, it’s how the game works. But what is different about you is you. Don’t present the information as some robot spitting out information! Add your personality into the articles! Throw some y’all’s and a’int’s in there if you need to!

Your audience will consistently come back to your blog for multiple reasons, trustworthy and helpful content are always at the top of the list. If you can add your personality into those important components as well, you are setting yourself apart and that will make people in your niche remember your name!

Should I Start A Blog With So Much Competition?

Believe it or not, competition is a good thing. It’s something you need to be encouraged by! If you search something on Google and no results come up (which is impossible at this point) that means no one is searching for things in your niche. However, if you search for something and millions of search results come back you see that people are interested in your niche.

This doesn’t mean that all blogging niches are going to be easy to break into though. There are some niches that require trustworthiness, expertise, or education to consistently rank on Google. Niches that are considered Your Money, Your Life (or YMYL) are typically harder to break into. Unless you are an expert in one of those niches, I would advise against starting a blog in that niche.

Other topics are reserved specifically for government agencies and for anything health or medicine related, normally pharmacy’s or article posted by doctors. When it comes to your health, Google wants trustworthy information from licensed professionals.

Even if you do choose to go for one of the niches that is harder to break into, don’t let that discourage you. If you have experiences that others don’t then you should share those experiences and let the world know how that turned out for you!

What Makes A Blogging Niche Perfect For You?

The perfect blogging niche for you combines all three of the mentioned topics. Find your passion, what is something you can talk about for hours and enjoy every second of it. If you only take one thing away from this article let it be this: your niche should be your passion. Focus on your passion, write lots of helpful content, and the traffic will come and with traffic, revenue starts to come in too.

Consider earning potential, make sure that your niche has income opportunities. While some niches are fun to write about, they do not have much room for affiliate marketing. You would be limited to ad revenue and, if you’re able to create them, info products. This is important when you are thinking ahead and earning passive income.

Investigate the competition, see who the top dogs are in your niche and try to learn from them. When you review their websites, try to see what makes them stand out. Is it a distinct feature, their personality, or structure of their articles? Also, try to find topics in your niche that they haven’t covered. That is an opportunity you can pounce on and get some traffic!
