How to Be Successful in the Health and Fitness Niche

Health and Fitness

How many times have you searched for a quick way to lose five pounds? Or what are the healthiest foods to eat on the go? If you weren’t able to find what you were looking for, you want to look into the Health and Fitness niche!

The Health and Fitness niche is challenging to break into, but worth getting into if you have the proper credentials. You will need some education and experience to start a successful blog in this niche.

If you are a Primary Care Physician, Surgeon, Specialist, or Athletic Trainer and you are looking for some extra income on the side, a Health and Fitness blog may be right up your alley!

You Will Need Credentials

Health and Fitness Credentials

The Health and Fitness niche falls under the Your Money, Your Life category that Google has set in place. This is to ensure that the people who are searching for topics in this niche are getting their search queries answered by qualified people. For example, if you ask a question about the flu, you are going to want an answer from a healthcare professional. Google wants to provide the person searching with the best possible answer.

It will be important to prove you have the proper credentials in this niche. For the moment, let’s separate the Health and Fitness niche into “Health” and “Fitness.” We will take a look at the Health niche first. When trying to establish you are a qualified individual, you will definitely need to provide the degree behind your name. For example, “John Smith, M.D.” is going to be necessary on every page. It will be best to create an author bio and have that attached to each page. It may also be beneficial for you to have a picture of you in your doctor’s coat. You know what they say, seeing is believing! More people are inclined to trust if they can see your face.

For the Fitness niche, you will need to do something similar. If you are an Athletic Trainer, be sure to include your degree and your experience. While you may not necessarily need a doctorate as an Athletic Trainer, in this field, people will want someone with experience. If someone searches for “best HIIT exercises for losing weight” and you give an answer with no credentials, that’s going to be problematic for two reasons. First, Google may not rank you as high as they could because you didn’t list your degree and experience. Second, if a person sees information from an unverified source, they will click off of your website and continue searching. Google notices that, and it can negatively affect your future rankings.

To sum up the credentials portion for the Health and Fitness niche, be sure to include all earned degrees (B.S., M.S., M.D., etc.) and your experience. If you are a Primary Care Physician, Surgeon, or Specialist be sure to list that. If you were the Athletic Trainer for the Texas Rangers for five years, list that. Google wants to see qualified individuals with experience when it comes to YMYL niches.

Choose Your Sub-Niche

Similar to how there are many different areas in medicine, there are many different sub-niches in the Health and Fitness niche. If you are a doctor, it would make sense to go with what you are already working in. For example, if you are a Primary Care Physician, stick with the basics. However, if you are a Specialist, you could focus on your area of expertise. People will be searching for both, so don’t be afraid to choose something specific. There are billions of people in this world; health questions come up daily.

Similar to the doctor’s, if you are an Athletic Trainer and your specialty is in Kinesiology, start your blog in that area. If you are a Chiropractor, start your blog on common back issues and stretches on how to resolve the issues without going into the Chiropractor’s office. Providing value to your audience is how you will gain traction and grow your audience.

Write Helpful Content for Health and Fitness

In the Health and Fitness niche, almost anything you write is going to be helpful content. Whether it is seven ways to relieve strep throat symptoms or nine stretches to loosen your back up, every piece of content will provide value. The key here is to be thorough.

Let’s look at strep throat for a second. We’ve all had it, so we all know what to expect. What we may not know are some ways to alleviate that pain. If you are a Primary Care Physician and have some inside information on how to help alleviate the symptoms of any sickness, I think I speak for the rest of the population when I say you should share that information. What is common sense to you may not be to others. What’s more, seeing it from a reputable blog with a reputable Primary Care Physician recommending the products goes a long way.

Same thing for the tight back I mentioned. If you’re a Chiropractor and have some tips on what stretches to do to alleviate back pain, millions of people will flock to your blog to get that information. Back problems are a fairly common problem, people will search for stretches to help loosen their back muscles up.

The key to helpful content will not only be covering the original search query but also trying to think about other questions that generally follow the original search. If you can answer two or three additional questions in the same blog post, Google will see that as helpful content, and you can work your way up to becoming a reputable blog with helpful information!

What to Expect

As I’ve mentioned multiple times, the Health and Fitness niche is a challenging niche to break into but very worth it if you have the credentials and the determination to stick with your writing during the “ghost-town” phase. There will be times when you think it’s not going to work out because you aren’t getting traffic. Don’t worry; traffic comes with time.

It will usually take anywhere from 3-6 months for you to start getting some consistent traffic. Don’t let that discourage you, though. All that means is that during that time, you have the opportunity to publish new blog posts and set up your website the way you want to. No one is going to notice the changes to the layout or which posts are edited. Think of that waiting period as a good thing; it’s preparation for your introduction to your audience.

The Health and Fitness niche is challenging, but finding the right sub-niche for you won’t be as difficult if you are blogging about what you work with every day. Given the right sub-niche and sticking with the blog by publishing 2-3 posts a week, you have the possibility to succeed!
